Is this the end of the story?

Answer: no, absolutely not. Masculinity is far more complicated than these two models. There is not a simple linear, temporal transition from the Strong Man to the New Man. Much of the research and articles found on the topic of masculinity subscribe to this idea of a transition from Strong Man to New Man and that any ambiguity one might observe between those two models in different men is simply the product of the transition period between the two. Many authors would have one conclude that any male can be broken down into some distinct proportions of the two models. Maybe Man X is 75% Strong Man and 25% New Man while Man Y is 50/50. However, the true story is far too complex to be completely understood in one project or in one location. The story of the modern male is one of intense diversity and vagueness. It is not simply a single axis with Strong Man and New Man on opposite poles. The framework of masculinity is multi-dimensional with many axes. This is clear when we consider examples such as popular comedians, playboys like Hugh Hefner, and the intelligentsia, just to name a few. In reality, many axes exist. Perhaps it is the case that the original model of masculinity was the Strong Man, but modern society has created more than just the New Man. There is a multitude of models of masculinity, and this is fundamentally important to understand. If anything can be taken away from this website, it is the ideas that reducing masculinity to a temporal transition from Strong Man to New Man is a huge oversimplification and that there exists a vast variety of models of masculinity.
